Action-horror game during medieval times

Heidelberg 1693 is a premium action game for PC coming from developer Andrade Games. It is a 2D side-scrolling horror adventure set during medieval times when the world is in constant war. In the middle of it all, a vengeful man raises an unholy army to slay his enemies.

Combining pixel graphics with a dark and gory art style akin to the likes of Blasphemous and Moonscars, Heidelberg offers a gritty historical-themed experience. Paired with punishing and violent combat, as well as some platforming challenges, it's something that fans of the genre will enjoy and appreciate.

17th century nightmare

Heidelberg 1693 takes place during the 17th century when Europe is in a state of war. The French, led by Louis XIV, the self-proclaimed Sun King, battles the Grand Alliance. His bastard son, poisoned and left for dead, emerges from the ashes as the Moon King with an army of the dead looking for vengeance. You are the Sun King's bravest musketeer, tasked with defeating the impending evil.

Armed with a rapier and a single-shot musket, you must stop the forces of the undead before all is lost. Jump and time your attacks to deal with a debilitating strike and finish them with a buckshot to prevent resurrection. There are 20 unique levels to explore throughout your journey. What's more, they feature some iconic places and personalities during that period in history.

In addition, this game even boasts animated cutscenes that were designed and inspired by the silent era of the film industry, which is impressive and well thought out. As is usually the case for releases in this genre, the game offers quite a challenge. If you're new to this, though, you might find the difficulty to be very high, especially at the beginning.

Make every shot count

Overall, in the sea of 2D action platformers, Heidelberg 1693 manages to stand out for its distinct art style, solid combat, and surprisingly historically accurate details in its clever story. If you don’t mind the steep learning curve, which adds a good challenge and you’re looking for something a little different, this game warrants some serious consideration. It really is that good. Highly recommended.
